For several years-and for several events- I’ve had the pleasure of working with Anne Easter and the Center For Patient Advocacy Leaders, or CPALS. While Angela and I’s main focus is working at local San Diego graphic recording events and surrounding cities, we’ve also recently began offering digital graphic recording services too.
Our first two digital events (via an ipad and zoom) were done with Anne and CPALS in 2021 and 2022.
Anne first hired me to work with them at in-person event in 2018. At that time, the event was focused on lung health via PALS united. For that event, we focused on framing the imagery with a nice title, logos, and a catchy, collaborative image of many hands gathering to cover the issues at hand.
Because we both enjoyed working together, we reconnected a few years later in 2021. At that time, it had been three years and a lot had gone in the world!
Anne was gathering with others in roundtable format to discuss the well-being of those affected by Movement Disorders and doing so virtually. Because of the virtual format, going with a digital graphic recording approach was the best bet.
In our talks before the event, Anne talked to me about keeping the layout confined to a single page and using the same graphic layout and look as the previous image we had created in San Diego several years prior.
The above image uses a the same strong framing title, the same sub call-to-action, multiple logos, and the central illustrated image of the issues at hand. For this image, because the event featured speakers, we also added speaker caricatures.
Since it was a digital canvas, the digital canvas was created as if it were to measure 4 ft x 8 ft in the physical realm. This gave us lots of space to work in and allowed me to stay small while filling in lots of information (over the course of a several hours) as you can see!
The best part of working in this digital format was that it was created in a way that allowed for easy editing and quicker final picture delivery to the event attendees. I even got to say hey and introduce myself to everyone which was fun!
After the successful use of digital graphic recording for the Movement Disorders event, Anne reached out about a year later and we worked on another event. This time, CPALS hosted a forum to address issues affecting veterans with rare disease conditions. You can see the image below.
Once again, we followed the same format, used the same imagery (with slight alterations) and once again, there was a lot of information that was shared!
Working together with Anne and CPALS multiple times has been enjoyable and I’m thankful for the trust they put in me to help them digitally record their important work in a visual format.
